Our programming is designed around a variety of learning styles and focuses on what the children are interested in. It is referred to as child initiated approach and draws from the Reggio Emilia ideology and the Early Years Learning Framework.
The Reggio Emilia ideology is based on the principles of respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment, it is based on the interests of the children through a self-guided curriculum.
We also connect to the vision of Nature Pedagogy where the influences of Claire Warden from Scotland has served to enrich our thinking regarding the importance of children’s need for natural play spaces. This thinking encourages us to engage children in long experiences in outside environments where children have control to shape the environment and explore natural elements. Connecting to sustainability and awareness of the human impact on the environment is close to our hearts.

The Early Years Learning Framework is a part of the new National Quality Framework, introduced by the Australian government, has a strong emphasis on play-based learning and building on the interests of the child.
This means that our educators practice a mix of learning strategies that include: learning through play, intentional use of learning environments, being responsive to children and intentional teaching.
In line with the Early Years Learning Framework our programming is focused on the following five learning outcomes:
- Children have a strong sense of identity
- Children are connected with and contribute to their world
- Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
- Children are confident and involved learners
- Children are effective communicators
Our 3 year-old program and 4 year-old Kindergarten program also use the Western Australian Kindergarten Learning Guidelines (WAKLG). These guidelines provide advice for planning, interacting with children, monitoring and assessing, and sharing information in a Kindergarten context. The WAKLG extends and elaborates on the concepts in the EYLF.
Here at Kidz Retreat use a web based program called EarlyWorks for the documentation of each child’s learning journey for their time in care. This includes photos and documentation of the child’s achievements available for families through an individualized portal.
The Commonwealth government has a policy for Childcare Center’s called the National Quality Framework. What does this mean?
